Enrique Iglesias comes to Qatar

So this happened back in May 2009. I didn’t have a blog then so I’ll put these up now :) And of course my usual disclaimer: My commentary on these photos is *intended* to be satire, so please noone take offense!! I actually did have a good time there.

The Qatar Foundation doesn’t skimp on expenses. When they have some of their youngest and brightest graduating, they’ll go all out on throwing a party to remember! For those of you who aren’t aware, the Qatar Education City is home to some of the top universities in the world, including Texas A&M, Weill Cornell, Georgetown and Carnegie Mellon. It was from Cornell Medical College (WCMC-Q) that some of my best friends would be graduating this year, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world! The drive to Doha takes approximately 5 hours from Dhahran, but in the end totally worth it! (And of course thank you Imran, Manish and Z for the tickets! You guys are awesome :) )

Part of the graduation festivities include an Enrique concert thrown on campus! Yes that’s right people. I’m single and I went to an Enrique Iglesias concert. And no I’m NOT gay. But it is my sole duty, by captioning the photos from the event below, to convince you otherwise ;P

A crowd of over 4,000 (of which 3,900 were women) waits in eager anticipation for the man called Enrique to arrive. Being fashionably late, he arrived an hour behind schedule. Guess Arab Standard time rubs off on Latin pop stars as well..

OMG HE’S HERE!!!! QUICK THROW YOUR PANTIES AT HIM!!

What a hunk! It was his birthday in a few days too, so we sang him the birthday song. A little disappointed at the lack of a birthday suit though… hmmm..

Balimos!!! The concert was off the hook! Yes thats right, we do have massive parties in the Middle East. What we don’t have of course, as Ahmedenijad once said, is gay people. Hence, this was the first Enrique concert without gay people.

Enrique’s surprised expression when he realizes that burqas and bomb-jackets aren’t really everyday attire in the Middle East (they’re more of a morning outfit thing, don’t you think?)

Enrique descends into the crowd of teenage girls. Quick!! Touch Him!! And then don’t wash your hands for a month!!!

ANOTHER look of surprise. What’s with that?! I think someone might have flashed him…

Finally a slow song, so we could sit down. ‘Don’t you forget about me’

The Middle East has come a long way for government hosted events like this to be taking place… The Gulf countries (excluding Saudi Arabia) tend to be much more liberal than the rest of the region.

And then Enrique took his shirt off. *whistles* lol, guess he didn’t realize it can get REAL hot in Qatar!

She touched him! SHE TOUCHED HIM!!! omg I’m sooo jealous!

Sign reads “We Love you Enrique”. Yes we do Enrique, Yes we do.

Knowing the Qatari government, that’s not confetti, it’s money.

It’s almost over…! The man is happy ;P

Whoo! Done! Enrique runs away. The entire show must’ve lasted less than an hour… and he didn’t even sing the only song I know! He’s sooo not my Hero (And yes, that IS the only song of his that I know).

Wait, one last shot. Enrique comes back and roars for Qatar! And shows a bit of skin ;P

… And we’re done :) After the end of the concert, Enrique would meet the graduating students backstage to congratulate them. But from what I hear, the poor man was pretty terrified of coming face to face with so many of ‘us’ that all he did was stay for a couple of group shots and ran away. This resulted in pandemonium where excited graduating girls would break a glass conference table. I’m not making this up!! :P

Ooooh adolescent girls (and former ones) from around the world thank you for this! So do the 3-5% of the male population of the world who are either gay or bi. No worries, since certain countries insist they don’t have any, “our guys” in the West try to inflate their numbers so those highly reliable epidemiologists from the WHO, NIH, NIMH, etc. don’t look bad with their global statistics.

Qatar–home of the Doha Debates, Education City, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, and now guest to Enrique (no last name needed)–I am sooo there!

You weren’t suggesting that girls in search of Enrique should let glass conference tables block there way were you? No, I thought not!

    ¡¡Sí, sí, bailamos!! (¡¡con Enrique!!)

    Haha thanks guys :)

Chiara, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned (I have no idea how to shorten that name, so I’m not even going to try!) was actually at the graduation ceremony for the Qatar Foundation. I missed that one though :(

  • Chiara

Oh, my condolences. Sheikha Mozah is not to be missed–the beauty, the fashion, and her efforts for education and dialogue are so admirable!
